Notable Relatives

It’s always fun to find that we have some nobility or famous people in our family. I ran across several Knights and Lady’s on both sides, but there were a few that stood out so I thought I would post about them here – Judy

On the Barrowman/Livingstone side –

Dr. David Livingstone

Near as one can tell the connection is through his older brother John b. 1811. More about David Livingstone here

The route to take through the tree to view this connection – Margaret Longmuir Barrowman (mother of Allan, Dan, and David McLean) > Agnes Lockhart Livingstone b. 1898 > Adam Aird Livingstone b. 1868 > follow Livingstone males until John Livingstone b. 1811. John is the brother of Dr. David Livingstone and was quite successful in his own life. More about John Livingstone here

*This connection is not 100% for certain, however I am confident that Adam Aird b. 1868 and John b. 1840 Livingstone are related mainly because of their wives. Adam’s wife, Margaret McVittie; her name is known to the family, and John’s wife Agnes Aird Lockhart is form the Lockhart line which is a surname that is carried down the line as middle names in the descendants.

On the McLean/Harris side –

Bishop William Turnbull

Bishop Turnbull was not only the Bishop of Glasgow in 1447, he was founder of Glasgow University. Please see the information on his media page at the WebTrees website. The route to take to view this connection – Follow the McLean line to Christian Lillico > then follow the Lillico line to Jannet Turnbull, wife of Andrew Lillico > follow the Turnbull line to near the end. There you will find the Bishop. View his Ancesry.ca profile | More info about Bishop Turnbull on Wikipedia | Wikipedia info on University of Glasgow

Robert the Bruce

Related to the Bruce line through the line of Matilda Bruse (Bruce/Brus) b. 1435. Not sure of the exact relationship, but likely some sort of cousin way back. This is also the longest line of the family. After the Bruce’s it carries on to Mauduit, then to Muelan (as in Muelan France), finally ending (for now) at about the year 850 A.D. More on Robert the Bruce here

The route to take through the tree to view this connection – Annie Bermudas Harris (mother of Francis Neil McLean) > George Fredrick Harris > follow Harris males until Thomas Harris b. 1745 who is married to Rebecca Brimyard > follow Brimyard for 1 generation until you get to the wife of Thoma Brimyard, Phoebe Marshall > follow Marshall males until John Marshall b 1446 > follow his wife Matilda Bruse b. 1435 which is the Bruse/Bruce/Brus connection. The name came from another “Mauduit” which if you follow it further will take you the distance back to the year 850. Follow the Mauduit’s then the Muelans to get there.

King James I & II

King James I (Stewart) and his father King Robert John (Stewart) through again the Harris side through Rachel Ritchie. This line goes back into the 1300’s. More on King James I here and King Robert III here

The route to take through the tree to view this connection – Annie Bermudas Harris (mother of Francis Neil McLean) > Rachel Ritchie > follow Ritchie males until James Ritchie b.1719 who is married to Margaret Watt > follow Margaret Watt (1 generation) to Elspeth Paterson > follow Paterson males until Sir James H. Paterson b. abt 1425 > follow his wife Lady Agnes “Jane” Schelis (Stewart) > King James I b. 1394 & his wife Queen Joan Beaufort b. 1404, King and Queen of Scots. > next is his father King Robert John Stewart III b. abt 1337, King of Scots. > I’m sure it carries on but it hasn’t been researched yet.

On the Hopper side –

Edmund John Hopper / Anne Jean Hopper (Thompkins)

Edmund, or E. J. was an ordaned minister in 1910 but had to leave due to poor health. He then became a teacher until in 1914, when he moved to Wynyard Saskatchewan and purchased a general store. He was very involved in community and was mayor of Wynyard Saskatchewan from 1940 to 1945. Their daughter Anne (Thompkins) stepped in to help when E.J.’s wife Margaret became blind. Anne left nursing school (with only one year left to complete) and looked after them both until their deaths.

He was also a Free Mason at Wynyard Lodge 66. See his Ancestry.ca profile here | Download article about E. J. (courtesy of Daryl Hopper)

Honourable Mention – (Old George, my dad’s old truck)

Not a famous relative per say, but it was just as important in our lives. It was the truck that got mom, dad & I (Judy) back home to B.C. (barely!). Well over 2 ton on a 1 ton truck OMG! It’s a wonder we made it home alive! Story is here.
